Santa Fe Mask
Matted Collage on Paper $225
My sister lives in Albuquerque. I love the natural colors combined with the strong Native American influence.
Accidents can be an artist's best friend. When I pulled the paper off the Gelli plate, it ripped. These torn shapes and edges became my inspiration.
A neighbor gave me his daughter's old stamp collection. They slid right in.

Sometimes things get too fussy and I wanted to simplify. Plus, it was just so hard keeping track of tiny pieces of paper!
So I started with larger pieces of to collage, which gave me a base structure. The negative space between the elements intrigued me and gave nice relief from the heavier elements.
The black 'rock' already had some texture from the gelli plate, but I emphasized it more by adding hatch marks with a white gel pen.
I called this "Rock of Ages" but I think I could have easily named it "Ins and Outs".

I bought a big box of vintage 'ephemeral' from an artist on Instagram. There were so many treasures inside, including this green script writing on paper and lots of old book pages.
This piece is really taking from so many people. There are bold gelli printed papers from my friend. Then my cousin sent me her late mother's "paste papers" which I included.
The shapes started to emerge and loved the feeling of people/times weaving through my life.
Sometimes my work/collages get so busy and they lose a focal point. So, I cut them up and re-collage them. That was the start of this piece. If you look in the center, you'll see some smaller collage pieces.
The bold tan on white was from a quick gelli print. The lines in the roof were caused by the brayer being dirty (happy accidents :)
As the piece started to take shape, I realized I had built a little house. I love all the angles in this piece, contrasted with a few lovely curves.
